Unless your intention is to do nothing but lie on the same beach every day in North Cyprus, a hire car is a must. Dolmus ply regularly on well populated routes, especially along the west coast but, to see as much as possible of this delightful island, a hire car is a necessity. Quotes for car hire in North Cyprus usually include full comprehensive insurance, without hidden extra charges, unlike many other countries. All drivers must be at least 25 years old and hold a valid driving licence.
Most car hire companies and some hoteliers offer a free pick-up from Ercan Airport and special rates for a pick-up from Larnaca in the south. Permission is needed to bring a hire car from the south or take a hire car south from the north and extra insurance has to be paid at the border either way. If a hire car is taken across the border, there will be no back-up possible from the hire company should there be breakdown.
