Holiday Accommodation in Kyrenia

Kyrenia Holidays, North Cyprus

Kyrenia is a popular holiday resort, and offers great selections of hotels for all budgets.

Whilst the intimate circular harbour is a magnet for visitors, the town has much more to offer with its castle, two museums, shopping and the old Turkish quarter. Looking at the modern town, it is easy to forget it has a long history stretching back many centuries and was particularly important as one of the ten city kingdoms of Classical Cyprus.

The castle, heavily fortified with thick walls by the Venetians, is open to visitors and inside there evidence of earlier reconstructions. It started life under the Romans and was later rebuilt by the Byzantines and again by the Lusignans. Inside is the Shipwreck Museum which houses the wreck of a cargo boat which sank 2,300 years ago just outside Kyrenia harbour. It was located by a local diver in 1967 at a depth of just 30 metres. The cargo was mainly amphorae of wine carried between Samos, Kos, Rhodes and Cyprus. It is the oldest known shipwreck in the world.

Walking out to the end of the mole will give you a good view of the harbour and castle but there is a better view still from out at sea. Ideally, take one of the boat trips out of the harbour. There are plenty of boat sailing trips, usually to a nearby beach for swimming or a barbecue lunch.

The bustling main street is clustered with small shops selling ladies and gents fashions, including made to measure tailors with clothes ready in days, food outlets, mini-markets and the usual tourist shops. Exploring the narrow steets of the old quarter up behind the castle is the place to find some of the more atmospheric courtyard restaurants often hidden behind walls.
